The City of Enfield South Australia 1853 - 1953

, T •;S June 15, 1853, saw the villages of Enfield, Prospect, Klemzig and Walker- '' , 1- 1 -j District Council of Yatala ville and the area surrounding them linked in -- under the Act for the appointment of District Councils passed in iSovember, 1852. The name Yatala derived from the native word Yertalla which, according to the Reverend C. C. Teichelmann, an early Lutheran missionary, means "water running by the side of the river, inundation, cascade . Much of the country between Port Adelaide and Tea Tree Gully to which the name applied was subject to flooding by fresh and salt water, so the title was apposite. The proclamation of the new council in the "Government Gazette read:— "Prochmaticm hy His Excellency Sir Henry Edward Fox Young, Knight, Lieutenant-Govemor of Her Majesty's Province of South Australia, and Vice-Admiral of the same, etc., etc. "Whereas hy an Act of the Governor and Legislative Council of the Province of Soiith Anstralia, intituled 'An Act to appoint District Councils, and to define the poii'ers thereof, it was amotigst other things enacted, that it should he lawful for the Governor, hy Proclamation in the 'South Aus tralian Government Gazette', to designate and constitute Districts, and to define the boundaries thereof; and whereas such petition duly signed as hy the said Act is required hath been presented to me, the said Lieutenant- Govemor, praying that such Proclamation may issue in respect of the dis trict hereinafter defined, and the same petition hath been duly published in the 'South Australian Government Gazette': Noiv therefore, I, the Lieutenant-Governor aforesaid, by and with the consent of the Executive Council, do hereby, hy this my Proclamation, designate and constitute the 'District of Yatala to he a District xvithin the meaning and for the purposes of the said Act: and I do hereby define the boundaries of such District." Then follows the delineation shown in the attached map. "And I do hereby eppoint Thowas Abbott, of the Little I'ara: Daniel Brady, of the Dry Creek; John Chamberlain, of the Pine Forest: John Harvey, of the North Para; and john Raf-less, the voanner of the Great North Road, ratepayers mthin the said Dislrici „f Yatala, to he the first District Council of the said District of Yatala ■page sixteen
