perform the duties of postmaster". The Colonial Secretary also obtained sanction for "a consequential expenditure of £6 a year as salary for Mr. Godson and a further £5 a year for the conyeyance of the mails to and from Enfield'. Six years later the Yatala Council acquired its own property, an acre of land on the Main North Road at Gepp's Cross, for £30. In the same year a contract for the erection of a council "house" was let to Mr. Bungey for £275. The "house" is still standing, the first building south of the Gepp's Cross Hotel. The seyerance of the north and south parts of the district took place in 1868, the northern area being named the District Council of Yatala North and the other, an area of 11,685 acres, the District of Yatala South. The old combined council held its last meeting on June 29, 1868. The proclamation of the new districts appointed fi\'e new councillors for Yatala North, but made no alterations to the members of the old Yatala District, and as a result Messrs. T. Turner and W. \A'alden, who did not retire by eflluxion of time, continued to serye on the new Yatala South Council. An election was held on July 15 to fill the remaining yacancies. and Messrs. I. VV. Sudholz, J. Rosser and James Pitcher were successful. All members were present at the first meeting, held at Gepps Cross on July 20, 1868, and Coun cillor 1. W. Sudholz was elected chairman, and Mr.'J. J. O'Sulliyan was appointed Clerk. Considerable trouble was experienced by both Councils, in arrit-inR at an equitable basis for the apportionment of the realisable assets of the old Yatala Coutrcd Yatala North claimed that the Council Chamber at Gepps Cross shou d be disposed of, and the proceeds, together with other assets be cquallv divided between the two Councils. Yatala South stronglv objected to this suggestion, and obtained a legal opinion. It was eventuallv'agreed that Yatala South should receive tw^diirds of the remaining assets; including a bank credit balance of £86, and Yatala North one-third. The records show that the other assets included a few special constables' batons and handcuffs, olhcc furni- turc and one road roller.
