Those who served: A list of Elected Members who served on the Councils that now comprise the City of Port Adelaide Enfield
Foreward
The following is a list of the Elected Members and Town Clerks who served what is now
the community of Port Adelaide Enfield.
This community traces its origins back to 1853 when the District Council of Yatala was
established. Yatala was a very large area extending from the outskirts of North Adelaide
north through the Adelaide Plains as far as what is now known as Salisbury and Tea
Tree Gully. Port Adelaide was proclaimed two years later and, in sharp contrast, was a
relatively small area on the eastern side of the headwaters of the Port River.
A portion of the Yatala Council was taken to establish the Town of Walkerville in 1855.
This was followed in 1868 with its division into two Councils in 1868 (Yatala North and
Yatala South). In 1872 the Town of Prospect was proclaimed, being a portion of Yatala
South, followed by the establishment of the Town of Rosewater in 1877, also a portion
of Yatala South. Apart from renaming Yatala South as Enfield in 1935, no significant
changes occurred to the boundaries of this Council until its amalgamation with Port
Adelaide in 1996.
The history at Port Adelaide was quite different. A number of independent Councils were
established between 1859 and 1872, including Portland Estate 1859, Glanville 1864,
Queenstown and Alberton 1864, and Lefevre’s Peninsula 1872, which was followed by
a period of amalgamations that finally ceased in 1900.
Portland Estate merged with Port Adelaide in two sections - the first in1876, the second
in 1884. Lefevre’s Peninsula separated into two Councils in 1877 (Lefevre’s Peninsula
and Birkenhead) and in 1883 Lefevre’s Peninsula merged with Glanville to become the
Town of Semaphore, whereas Birkenhead was annexed by Port Adelaide in 1886.
This was followed by the annexation of Queenstown and Alberton in 1898, Rosewater
in 1899 and Semaphore in 1900. Apart from a number of boundary adjustments (some
on the southern boundary being quite significant), no other amalgamations occurred
until the one between Enfield and Port Adelaide Councils in 1996.
This list was compiled by William D Roche based upon the work of Ray Gilbert and Pam Low.
While every effort has been made to ensure the list is accurate and complete, there is some concern
about the accuracy and completeness of the historical sources that may have lead to errors or
omissions.
