heavy metals that are present in the Adelaide coastal environment (EPA SA,
2011).
Nutrient loads - Nitrogen and Phosphorus
Studies into the environmental status of the waterways consistently report that
nutrients, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus are the key pollutants of concern
throughout the waterways.
There are two main point sources that contribute to the 1538 t/year of nitrogen
and 258 t/year of phosphorus loads to the waterways. These are Penrice Soda
Products (820 t/year Nitrogen) and the Bolivar Wastewater Treatment Plant
(WWTP) (477 t/year Nitrogen and 232 t/year Phosphorus) (EPA WQIP, 2008).
Community Monitoring - KESAB Waterwatch
Community monitoring is coordinated by the KESAB and the Adelaide and Mt.
Lofty Rangers NRM Board through the snapshots program. The majority of
Waterwatch sites are located along the Port Adelaide River. (The results
relating to freshwater sites are discussed in the chapter on inland waters).
