50th Birthday
The National Railway Museum
celebrates its 50th birthday this year,
and as part of those celebrations it
will formally unveil and launch the
complete restoration and return to
service of the Bluebird railcar ‘Kestrel’
on the March long weekend from
9 to 11 March.
Kestrel is the last surviving original
Bluebird in operating condition.
They were designed and built at the
South Australian Railways Islington
Workshops in 1957 and, at the
time, were the most modern
air-conditioned railcars in Australia.
The Bluebird railcars ran to most
regional areas of the state,
including Mount Gambier,
Whyalla, Broken Hill, Gladstone,
Victor Harbor and Morgan.
Now owned by the National Railway
Museum, Kestrel will make special
runs at the museum over the three
day weekend, with rides beginning
from 12 noon on Saturday and 11am
on both Sunday and Monday.
The runs will take place every 30
minutes along the museum’s own
1km loop track. Fares will be $3 per
person for the 10 minute trip.
The National Railway Museum is a
non-government funded ‘not for
profit’ museum, run by volunteers.
Normal admission prices apply for
entrance to the museum on Lipson
Street Port Adelaide, which is open
from 10am to 5pm daily.
ST Yelta
steams again
One of the best ways to see the
working port, spot the Port River’s
resident dolphins and experience
the charm of steam power is to
take a cruise on the ST Yelta, South
Australia’s last working steam tug
and an icon of the Port River.
It was built for the Adelaide
Steamship Company and has
spent its entire working life in Port
Adelaide. Yelta was built at Sydney’s
Cockatoo Island Dockyard in 1949.
It is powered by a triple expansion
steam engine that was built for a
corvette during the Second World
War but became surplus when the
war ended.
Yelta’s next cruises are on Saturday
16 and Sunday 17 March. Cruises
leave the wharf at 1.30pm and return
at 3.30pm. Please be at the wharf
at 1.10pm and check-in at the Port
Adelaide Lighthouse to receive your
boarding pass.
Tickets cost $20 and include free
admission to the SA Maritime
Museum. Please no children under
two years of age for safety reasons.
You can also see the Museum’s new
exhibitions First Voyages: Exploring
the Southern Coast and Terre
Napoleon – Land of Napoleon.
Places are limited to 50 people per
cruise so please call the Museum
on 8207 6255 or email at maritime@
history.sa.gov.au to book a berth.
Yelta is crewed by volunteers and
generously sponsored with recycled
fuel by Mulhern Waste Oil.
Come fly a kite
The Adelaide International Kite
Festival is on again, and on from
10am to 5pm on Saturday 30 and
Sunday 31 March all eyes will be
looking skyward when Semaphore
foreshore and beach comes alive with
colour and music.
Kites of all shapes and sizes will fill
the skies as part of the festival with
additional activities that include kite
making, carnival rides, entertainment
and a circus.
Amazing displays of kites from
around the world will keep the whole
family entertained, with kite battles,
kite surfing, stunt kites, handmade
kites and plenty of kites available to
buy and take home.
