Field staff go high-tech

A major internal project by the City of Port Adelaide

Enfield has vastly improved our capacity to provide

efficient on the road service delivery to the community.

The Council’s 174 field staff now have access to Ipads

and new computers systems to replace paper-based

management of customer service work order requests.

This has removed a lot of the costly overheads associated

with data entry, missing forms, paper handling and

error correction.

And it’s already shown immense benefits; from the initial

customer request and job scheduling, through to labour

cost planning, plant management and reporting.

Acting Director of Technical Services, Gary Baker, said,

“The new software alongside the new work orders

iPad app has changed the response time of field staff

dramatically whilst increasing Council’s ability to provide

quick and effective services.”

The new systems also allow more effective planning and

scheduling of tasks. In the past, field staff would have to

return to the depot to pick up paper-based job allocations,

now these can be sent directly to the nearest team out on

the streets to action immediately

“The team’s ability to structure daily works to suburbs has

shown and proven to be more productive in organising

their program work and customer service requests,” Mr

Baker said.

For example, a resident might report rubbish dumped in

the Council area via the Online Services portal at

www.portenf.sa.gov.au

This report is then automatically uploaded into the

customer request system and can be allocated directly

to the crew responsible for collection. In some cases,

dependant on crew workload and availability, some

requests are being responded to within just two hours.

Field staff have embraced the technology and the system

has generated positive feedback from the community. This

initiative exemplifies how Council is progressively taking

advantage of new technologies to increase efficiencies.
