The winners of the 2018 City of Port Adelaide Enfield Australia
Day Awards were announced at a ceremony at Enfield
Community Centre on January 25.These prestigious Awards
celebrate the exceptional people and groups who have made
an outstanding contribution in their community.The Awards
allow us to recognise and appreciate the service, commitment
and achievements individuals and organisations give to enhance
community spirit and pride to make our city a better place.
Citizen of the Year - John Baker (1)
John Baker was awarded Citizen of the Year in recognition
of his contribution to community sport, through decades of
involvement as a player and volunteer with the Gepps Cross
Football Club and Northgate Community & Sports Club. He has
been player, coach, team manager and runner for many years,
assisting with both junior and senior teams. John has contributed
to the administration of the club for over 35 years and held roles
as Chairman, Director,Treasurer, and Committee Member. He has
also been inducted as a life member for his years of dedication
and hard work. John was also a key facilitator in obtaining
sponsorships for the club and attracting significant funding.
Young Citizen of the Year - Benito David Carbone (2)
Benito David Carbone is a passionate individual who avidly
supports young people, in particular, disadvantaged youth on the
Peninsula. He is a Church YouthWorker for the Port Church,
co-ordinating the youth group for 15-20 local teens every Friday
night and is also a technical volunteer for Sunday services at the
Church. David is a volunteer journalist, writing articles covering
Premier League games for Basketball SA and volunteers for a
radio program called ‘TheWire’.
Community Event of the Year -
CityReach Baptist Church Oakden- Carols Alive (3)
CityReach Baptist Church Oakden has been recognized for their
Carols Alive Event. More than 300 volunteers helped put on this
event which attracted over 4000 people from the community.
The Church makes no profit from this event and ensures
that every year it is a well organised, successful and enjoyable
celebration for the community.

CityReach Baptist Church Oakden -
Joy to the City Weekend
CityReach Baptist Church Oakden recruited over 200
volunteers in June 2017 for their first Joy to the CityWeekend.
Across one weekend, the group provided a variety of services
to the community of Port Adelaide Enfield.These volunteers
refurbished theWestern Area Domestic Violence Service
offices, sanded and painted local park benches at Roy Amer
Reserve, dropped gift packages off to local fire fighters and
ambulance officers, put on a free concert at Helping Hand
Nursing Home, donated 40 care packages to theWestern
Adelaide Domestic Violence Service, and gifted dozens of
blankets to the Leukaemia Foundation.A signifigant time
was spent planning these various initiatives, and the team at
CityReach Baptist Church Oakden worked hard to ensure
that the support provided to the local community groups was
meaningful.

The Port Adelaide Athletics Club -
Indigenous Athletics Squad (4)
The Port Adelaide Athletics Club formed a local athletics
squad for Aboriginal Youth.Their Indigenous Athletics Squad
has engaged a large number of youth who were not otherwise
participating in sport and supported them to train and
compete.This program assists individuals who want to further
their sporting aspirations and helps to engage the Aboriginal
community with athletics and competitions.
Service to the Community Awards
Recipients included JoshWatts, Lee Drew, Shane Cook, the
Port Church for their ‘Pop up Kitchen’ and One Culture
Football for ‘Inclusive Futsal’.
The Awards ceremony was combined with a Citizenship
Ceremony, during which 50 people were welcomed as
Australian Citizens, and was part of Council’s two day
celebration for Australia Day.
