BRIDGE TO BIRKENHEAD.
The long-discussed bridge connecting Birkenhead
with Port Adelaide has advanced a further stage during
the present year.
In response the request from a large deputation
which waited on the
Go^■ernr^ent on 2nd October, sound-
ings were taken on each side of ri\'er, and it is now pos
sible that during the coming year something of a tan
gible nature may eventuate. A tlirough road from the
capital city to Outer Harbor will cause the Peninsula
portion of our city to develop and assist l^evond all
knowledge^ in expanding the industries along the river
side. During the year the Ford Company has taken up
a large area of land and building operations are in
progress. Approximately £140.000 will be expended in
land, plant and equipment by this company.
The Vacuum Oil Company has also purchased
several acres of land, and intends spending in the vicinity
of £300,000 in the near future. Other industries contem
plate expansion, so that it will l)e seen how necessary a
bridge is for the development of our City.
INNER HARBOR.
Improvements are being carried out by the Govern
ment and the Harbors Board in our inner harbor. During
the coming year a good deal of valuable work will be
put in hand: the floating crane installed this year is a
valuable asset to the Harbors Board plant; it is on record
also this year that the largest steamer to enter our inner
harbor was the s.s. .^\lbama. of 12,786 tons.
DUPLICATION OF PORT ROAD.
Several conferences have been held through the year
with neighboring Councils and associated bodies in
regard to traffic problems on the Port Road. It was
pointed out to the Government by deputation on the
25th September that the moncv expended on the present
woodblocked road had been returned to the Treasury
through the Motor Tax since the advent of this class of
