How a Community Art Project
Becomes a Public Treasure
Footprints (66)
How significant is Community Art and
what is it that sets it apart from other
Public Art across the city?
A person could be forgiven for initially not
noticing any differentiation between the
two but there is something of significance
that props Community Art onto its
own distinct pedestal – and that is the
process. Community Art is all about
processes. In fact the end result, however
beautiful, stands in the shadow of the
shining light of the collective and creative
mind that hatched it; the community
– from its embryonic beginning to its
celebrated completion.
Members of the community who have
participated in such projects have found
them rewarding on many levels; physical,
social, mental and spiritual. Community
Art projects don’t have to be of titanic
proportions and they don’t have to
cost a fortune or require you to have
extraordinary artistic talent. They need to
be engaging, rewarding and fun! They are
for everyone, people from all walks of life
and for any age group.
To quote a participant of the ‘Mind and
Body Mosaic Stepping Stone’ Community
Art Project to celebrate Mental Health
Week in 2005:
“It’s nice to share decisions. The colours
are wonderful; they get inside you
and sing a bit.”
