Coastal Acid Sulphate Soils
Within the City of Port Adelaide Enfield acid sulphate soils exist in the Barker
Inlet and Port Adelaide River environments and are discussed in more detail in
the chapter 'Land'. Potential Acid sulphate soils (PASS) may form under tidal
conditions and can generally be expected to occur naturally in low-lying coastal
areas. Disturbance of these soils and exposure to air can create and mobilise
sulphuric acid formation, and cause toxic runoff that can degrade the marine
environment and result in fish kills and algal blooms.
