Fauna
Biodiversity Park is considered to contain regionally significant populations of
two reptile species,
Ctenpphorus pictus
(painted dragon) and
Pogona barbata
(bearded Dragon) as well as a number of other reptile species.
The White-striped Freetail Bat (
Austronomus australis
) and Gould’s Wattled Bat
(
Chalinolobus gouldii
) has been observed in Biodiversity Park. The White-
striped Freetail Bat is a large robust bat weighing up to 41 grams. No other
native species or signs of these species were observed within the park and it is
unlikely that other native terrestrial fauna species still exist in the area.
Of the 23 birds recorded from this site, 19 were using habitat within the site,
whilst 4 species - the Whiskered and Caspian Terns, Silver Gull, and Australian
Pelican - were recorded flying overhead. There were nine species listed which
have a 'conservation significant' rating under the Commonwealth’s
Environment
Protection & Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999
(EPBC Act), the SA
National
Parks and Wildlife Act 1972
(NPW Act) or within the Southern Lofty Botanical
Region (EBS, 2008).
Exotic fauna species observed included rabbits, hares, foxes, feral cats, mice
and rats, and exotic birds including the Spotted Turtle-Dove, Feral Pigeon and
House Sparrow (EBS, 2008).
Community Group
The Friends of Biodiversity Park Group has undertaken an integrated program
of environmental remediation work on the State Government-owned site for the
last seven years with the aim of improving the ecology of the site. Activities
have included a combination of on-ground revegetation work to enhance the
biodiversity of the varied plant communities, and enhancing the habitat value for
the indigenous wildlife found on the site.
Substantial revegetation work commenced in 2006 with the purchase of 1400
plants, funded by the City of Port Adelaide Enfield, as part of follow-up work on
revegetation planting that was undertaken in 2003.
