number of the sites have been monitored using the
Nature Conservation
Society of South Australia Bushland Condition Monitoring Framework (2006),
and the remaining biodiversity monitoring has been collated by Delta
Environmental Consulting using accredited monitoring methodologies. The
majority of biodiversity monitoring is undertaken on an annual basis and at
some sites it is undertaken more regularly (for example at Mangrove Cove). The
first Bushland Condition Monitoring began in 2008, with sites established at
Semaphore, Largs Bay, Taperoo, Biodiversity Park, Torrens River Linear Park,
Folland Park and Dry Creek.
The City of Port Adelaide Enfield covers an area of 91.7 square kilometres and
a population of 102,929 people. The City is highly developed, but is nestled
between unique and significant natural features including diverse coastal,
estuary and land-based ecosystems and habitats. The map in figure 58 shows
the locations and types of open space areas across the Council. Open space
comprises 3050 hectares (32%) of the total Council area (9416 hectares). The
Council currently manages 22% of this open space area. State Government and
the private sector manage the remaining 78% of open space. Eighty-six per
cent of open space has been classified as permeable and 14% impermeable to
water. The permeable open space allows the majority of rainfall to penetrate
into the surface and sub-surface soil mediums and then into the local
groundwater aquifers, which support small and large flora species that rely on
the groundwater/surface water for survival.
