Adelaide Coastal Water Quality Improvement Plan (ACWQIP)
To manage the health of Adelaide’s coastal waters, the EPA has developed the
Adelaide Coastal Water Quality Improvement Plan (ACWQIP)
.
This plan includes a variety of strategies and actions aimed at reducing
discharges of nutrients and suspended solids to Adelaide’s coastal waters while
addressing the
14 recommendations
of the
Adelaide Coastal Water Study
(ACWS) completed in February 2008. The plan has also incorporated the
targets set in the Port River Water Quality Improvement Plan.
The ACWQIP includes environmental values (EVs) – those features of the coast
that are of importance to the community; and water quality objectives (WQOs) –
measurable targets that protect water quality for Adelaide’s coastal waters.
The ACWQIP has been developed in partnership with relevant government
agencies, business and industry.
Main Strategies included in the ACWQIP for improvement in water quality are:
Reduce nutrient, sediment and coloured dissolved organic matter
discharges.
Promote integrated use of wastewater and stormwater across Adelaide.
Further investigate sources and volumes of sediment and colour dissolved
organic matter.
Integrate monitoring for cumulative impact assessment across Adelaide
region.
Model and evaluate the impacts of climate change, new human impacts
and population growth implications for Adelaide’s coastal waters.
Establish planning and funding priorities for water initiatives for Adelaide’s
coastal waters.
Undertake seagrass mapping and rehabilitation work.
Build community capacity to take action to improve coastal water quality.
