Biodiversity
Introduction
Biodiversity (or biological diversity) is the variety of life and its composition,
structure and function, at a range of scales. Within this broad definition, four
interconnected levels of diversity are commonly recognised - genetic diversity,
species diversity, ecosystem diversity and landscape diversity.
The City of Port Adelaide Enfield has significant areas of open space and
natural areas supporting biodiversity. These areas are shown in Map 16 and
include:
Inland Natural and Native Areas
Coastal Areas
Folland Park, Enfield
Semaphore
Dry Creek, Valley View
Semaphore South
Mangrove Cove
Largs Bay
Torrens Linear Park
Taperoo
Roy Amer Reserve, Oakden
North Haven
R B Connolly Reserve, North Haven
Outer Harbor
Stockade Botanical Park
Mutton Cove
Biodiversity Park, Outer Harbor
Barker Inlet and Wetlands
Range Wetlands
Magazine Creek Wetlands
The Port Adelaide Enfield Open Space Plan recognises that 'natural areas' are
an important and unique category of public open space and identifies key
directions for natural areas, including:
1.
Protection of dune-scapes to maintain recreation value and access.
(Semaphore South, Semaphore, Largs Bay, Taperoo and North Haven)
2.
Rehabilitation of coastal habitat to increase biodiversity as well as creating
a wider coastal and inland natural open space network.
(Semaphore South, Semaphore, Largs Bay, Taperoo, Outer Harbor,
Mutton Cove and Biodiversity Park)
3.
Conserve and reinforce wetland habitat value
(Barker Inlet wetland, the Range Wetlands and Magazine Creek Wetland)
4.
Maintain existing balance and natural Riverina landscape character and
recreational value.
(River Torrens, Linear Park, and Dry Creek)
5.
Preserve habitat value and develop interpretive trails
(Mangrove Park)
6.
Manage isolated area of natural open space. Ensure adequate links via
habitat corridors to other natural areas.
(Roy Amer Reserve and Wingfield Reserve)
7.
Conserve as sensitive areas of high value natural habitat
(Folland Park)
