Indicators
Environmental indicators support quantitative reporting that enable more
informed and accurate decision making and policy development.

Distribution of known potential and actual acid sulphate soils in the
Gillman-Barker Inlet area, by hectare.
Number of developments that require soil assessment and remediation
Pressure indicator
Number of new developments of the type that are listed in the State
planning policy as potentially contaminating activities

Site remediation
The
Environment Protection Act (1993)
provides a risk based approach to the
remediation of contaminated sites. By way of definition, to remediate a site
means to treat, contain, remove or manage chemical substances on or below
the surface of the site so as to:-
(a) eliminate or prevent actual or potential harm to the health or safety of
human beings that is not trivial, taking into account current or proposed
land uses; and
(b) eliminate or prevent, as far as reasonably practicable -
(i) actual or potential harm to water that is not trivial; and
(ii) any other actual or potential environmental harm that is not trivial,
taking into account current or proposed land uses.
The Port Adelaide Waterfront Development (Stages 1 and 2) is an example of a
significantly previously contaminated wharf and industry area being remediated
to a standard that made it suitable for the development of residential and public
open space areas.
Other sites in the City that have been remediated to various levels suitable for
their proposed use include a portion of the old Islington Rail Yards at Kilburn
(known as "Jack Watkins Park"), and the former Meyer Oval area at Largs
North. The site at Kilburn has become an open space and recreational area for
the use of the local community.
