The decision by Penrice to lay off 60 of
its workers following the closure of its
chemical facility at Osborne, along with
the closure of Mann’s Mitre 10 and the
loss of another 40 jobs is a reminder of
the tough economic times being felt by
many local businesses.
Port Adelaide Enfield Council is
standing strong in the face of such
tough economic realities and remains
committed to preserving the amenities of
our city as well as guiding and helping
the city’s small business community
wherever possible.
I have a strong personal belief that we
should all be doing our best to assist
small businesses by shopping locally
whenever possible. While I have nothing
against larger national, corporate
businesses, which also have a very
strong role to play in our community,
I believe it is our small family-owned
businesses that really are the lifeblood
of Port Adelaide Enfield.
They provide local jobs and opportunities
for us and our neighbours. They are the
ones who so often sponsor our sporting
teams and support community events.
We cannot allow them to stagnate and
fail through lack of local support.
At the same time there is also a crucial
role for the State Government which
could start by relocating a Government
department or two to Port Adelaide. Not
just another welfare agency but a genuine
economic commitment to boosting our
city’s workforce who would experience
fewer traffic and parking problems, plus
enjoy great accessibility compared to
the CBD together with a hospitable and
welcoming community.

Mayor’s Message
Mayor Gary
Johanson
Its population at the last Census in
August 2011 was 22,054, an increase
of 2188 (or 11.1%) from 2006 when the
population was 19,784. This compares
with a population increase of 9.8% for
the City of Port Adelaide Enfield and
6.1% for Greater Adelaide.
Here are some of Enfield Ward’s
key statistics:
Total population: 22,054
• Males: 50.7%
• Females: 49.3%
• Median age: 35
Occupied dwellings: 9,776
Ethnicity - Country of Birth:
• Australia 58.2%
• India 6.5%
• United Kingdom 3.6%
• Vietnam 3.1%
• Afghanistan 3%
• China 1.8%
People per household: 2.3
Vehicles per dwelling: 1.5
Population density: 1,935 persons/km²
(Based upon 2011 Census usual
residence data).
Enfield Ward’s population density of
1,935 persons/km² when compared
with other locations makes interesting
reading. It is more densely populated
than the overall figure for the City of
Port Adelaide Enfield (1,227person km²)
but is still not as densely populated as
the City of Unley (2,678person/km²)
and well short of cities such as Tokyo
(6,000 persons/km²).
