The Hostel Stories Project
An ongoing research project in partnership with Port Adelaide
Enfield Council is examining the experiences and memories
of former residents of and workers in migrant hostels, camps,
and reception centres in South Australia from the mid-1940s
to the mid-1990s. In addition to hostels within what is now
Port Adelaide Enfield Council (Gepps Cross, Rosewater, and
Semaphore), many current residents of the council resided at
Finsbury-Pennington.
The Finsbury Hostel which opened in late 1949 was the
largest and longest operating of all of the South Australia
hostels, closing in the early 1990s having been renamed
Pennington in approximately 1980 due to a change in
zoning. The site, located just to the south of Grand Junction
Road and bounded by King, Glenroy, Ariel and Bell Streets,
was formerly used as accommodation for munitions workers
during World War II.
It is difficult to ascertain how many migrants resided at
Finsbury-Pennington during its operation, but it almost
certainly housed more migrants than any of the other
SA hostels.
The research project is eager to make contact with former
residents and workers of the hostel, particularly in the later
time periods of its operation.
If you would like to provide information, be interviewed, or
lend or donate relevant materials (such as photos or items of
interest from your time in the hostel) for research or for the
exhibition planned for 2013-14 at the Migration Museum,
please contact the research team at 8313 5570 or by email
at hostelstories@adelaide.edu.au.
