Looking into our past…
More immigrants, the Ballarat brings 238.
The P & O branch service steamer Ballarat, from
England, arrived at the Outer Harbor on Monday
with 1,161 passengers. There were 238 State
assisted passengers for South Australia, including
31 selected domestic helpers. The balance of the
238 consist of nominated families.
The State Immigration Officer (Mr. E. J. Field)
stated on Monday afternoon there was
an outbreak of measles on board, and the
Quarantine Officer (Dr. Gething) arranged for
24 of the passengers to be detained at Torrens
Island. Seven of them - children, whose ages
range between 1 1/2 and 5 years-are suffering
from measles, and the remainder are contacts. No
deaths occurred on the voyage. Captain Hansen
said he had had a remarkably smooth passage
and the passengers had conducted themselves
in an admirable manner. In addition to the
measles patients, there is also a case of bronchial
pneumonia. The patients will be released as soon
as Dr. Gething says they are free from infection.
The infected passengers have been dealt with
under the Federal Quarantine Act ... which
provides that the cost of quarantining shall be
borne by the shipping company concerned.

Enfield requirements
The Hon. P. McM. Glynn, M.H.R., waited upon
the Deputy Postmaster-General, with Mr. A. W.
Shillabeer (chairman of the Yatala South District
Council) and Mr. S. J. Beasley (clerk), and asked
for an extension of the postal delivery so as to
include Enfield, and the establishment of a public
telephone at the Enfield post-office. The Deputy
Postmaster-General replied that the first request
should receive consideration, and the second
would be granted if the postmistress would
undertake to attend to the telephone.

The Port Adelaide Workers Memorial
The Port Adelaide Workers Memorial is located
outside the Port Adelaide Visitor Information
Centre at the intersection of St Vincent Street and
Commercial Road. “This memorial is unique, as
it honors people who have worked unceasingly
in an everyday way, sacrificing much that their
fellows might enjoy a little more of the better
things of life. The statue should inspire the
younger generation to go on and try to make the
conditions of life better, as those whose names
are inscribed on the monument had done. These
workers have blazed the track by achieving the
eight hours working day and many of the other
conditions of labor which workers today enjoy,
they should read the history of what these
pioneers went through. Characteristic of their
work was the fact that they always relied on an
appeal to reason, feeling sure that their case and
their cause was just and right.”
