Biodiversity

Current actions supported by the NRM Board include regional implementation
of two national Birds Australia projects concerning conservation and
management of shorebirds (Shorebirds 2020).
Additionally, actions undertaken through the Board’s strategy to manage and
protect coastal habitats and estuaries include specific actions for undertaking
on-ground works to conserve and protect coastal habitats and also the
development of coastal action plans. The
Metropolitan Adelaide and Northern
Coastal Action Plan 2009
incorporates a coastal conservation and threat
assessment and identifies priority local actions.
The City of Port Adelaide Enfield is advocating for the multi-agency
development of a strategic-level Biodiversity Management Plan for the Barker
Inlet Wetlands, Range Wetlands and Magazine Creek Wetlands. The
Management Plans should aim to provide:
a) Biodiversity values including; remnant vegetation, significant trees,
threatened species and habitat and existing plantings and revegetation
areas.
b) Threatening processes including; exotic plant species, introduced animals,
human impacts and pollution, and climate change
c) Management recommendations regarding water flow, water levels and
water quality to sustain water dependent ecosystems.
d) Biodiversity Management Actions developed to manage exotic species,
pollution, revegetation projects, water flow regimes and human impacts for
a 5-year time frame.
Table 52 includes a list of Migratory Shorebirds that are known in the habitat
types at Barker Inlet
Stormwater.
Future development at Gillman
Following a re-zoning of the area in 2009, the State Government are preparing
a Master Plan for the Gillman area, in order to prepare the land for future
industrial and related land use. The area is identified in the State’s planning
strategy (30 Year Plan for Greater Adelaide) as a future industrial and logistics
hub. This is a critical and timely opportunity to ensure that the area is planned
and developed in such a way as to protect, improve, and rehabilitate the highly
significant ecological and related commercial assets of the area. Council is
seeking to be fully engaged in the planning process in 2012/13.
