Freddy Food Scraps
Freddy Food Scraps is Port Adelaide Enfield Council’s
newest addition to its waste education family, helping
to teach residents about the kitchen organics
recycling program.
Freddy is a characterised version of the free ‘
bio basket’ which has been made available to all
Port Adelaide Enfield residents.
Freddy has already put in appearances in previous editions
of Pen2Paper, or you may have spotted him at the Twilight
Christmas Pageant, the Port Mall Markets or during the
Semaphore Street Fair.
For this edition, Freddy has one simple message: please find
a home for a bio basket (like Freddy) in your kitchen.
Freddy suggests the kitchen bench or under the sink in the
cupboard as a good location, but any free space in the
kitchen will work just as well.
The more people who find homes for bio baskets (like
Freddy), the more waste we can stop going to landfill. For
more information on how to get involved in the kitchen
organics recycling program, please contact the Waste
Line on 1800 777 844 or visit www.portenf.sa.gov.au/

Cloth ‘eco’ nappies for hire
The number of parents using cloth nappies is on the
increase, largely because these days they’re just as easy
to use as disposable nappies and much more
environmentally friendly.
“The thought of using cloth nappies makes a lot of parents
squirm,” says Grace Barila from Eco Bums Cloth Nappy
Library. “If only they knew how easy it is.”
Port Adelaide Enfield Council and Eco Bums Cloth Nappy
Library is enabling parents to hire a kit of cloth nappies to
try them before they make a decision if it is for them and
their baby.
Eco Bums have done the hard work for parents by choosing
seven brands of nappies that cover the different styles that
are on the market, giving parents the opportunity to try
before they buy.
Port Adelaide Enfield Council is subsidising the hire cost,
so that the normal $60 fee to hire the kit for two weeks is
reduced to only $20.
“It is easier to use modern cloth nappies than people might
think,” Ms Barila says. “With biodegradable liners and wet
bags, modern nappies are a far cry from the heavy cloth
nappies of yesteryear. Modern versions are much more
absorbent, less bulky, easier to wash and are just as easy to
use as disposables, while looking great.”

Are you Digital switch ready?
Since digital TV began broadcasting in 2001,
many people have purchased a new TV or set
top box to accommodate for the changes. On 2
April 2013, areas of Adelaide will switch off their
analog TV signals and switch to digital-only TV. So
if you haven’t already made the switch and plan
to replace your TV, please dispose of your old
TV responsibly through the Council hard refuse
collection or at one of the drop off points.
For more information about the digital switch
go to: www.digitalready.gov.au or call the Digital
Ready Information Line on 1800 20 10 13.
Changes to waste pickups
There will be no waste and recycling services
carried out on Good Friday 29 March 2013, which
will instead take place on Saturday 30 March 2013.
This is the only change over the 2013 Easter break
with Easter Monday collections (1 April) and
Anzac Day collections (Thursday 25 April) taking
place as normal. Services will be as normal for
the Queen’s Birthday/Volunteer’s Day holiday on
Monday 3 June. If you have any queries about your
waste or recycling collection dates please ring the
Wasteline on 1800 777 844.
