MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
With our rich history, our maritime trading gateway, our varied
ethnic and cultural communities and our natural environmental
attractions, the City of Port Adelaide Enfield is the most unique
Council in South Australia.
We provide affordable housing, major tourism and arts
destinations and as a hub for logistics, defence, manufacturing
and new start-up businesses, the City of Port Adelaide Enfield
is a key region for the State’s economic growth.
This presents many opportunities and challenges for us as
a Council, and over my eleven years as Mayor, I continue to
be committed to working with our Elected Members and
administration team to best serve our diverse community.
This year we furthered our relationships with the State and
Federal Governments and local businesses to continue to
develop the region, which is at the heart of an $89 billion
rolling shipbuilding plan.
This includes the future construction of a shipbuilding yard
for two offshore patrol vessels and the building of 12
submarines to start in 2022, which cements our new
civic-city relationship to foster industry and trade with the
French maritime city of Cherbourg.
We have masterplans for construction of 760 homes
as part of the Dock One project, a maritime precinct at
Dock Two and further planned business, housing and
community developments.
Our award winning Lightsview residential development is
progressing as planned and is not only setting a benchmark
in contemporary home design in South Australia, but is also
fast becoming a sought after address in the City of Port
Adelaide Enfield.
The urban renewal of Kilburn and Blair Athol project is one
of the most significant revitalisation projects undertaken in
South Australia, and is aimed at creating inviting public places
and revitalising the local community. It consists of upgraded
streets and parks, public transport links, improved stormwater
management and local business attraction initiatives.
Integrated transport and connectivity is important for the City
of Port Adelaide Enfield, with increased business development
and more people living and working in the area, so we
continue to work with State and Federal Governments to
deliver the best outcomes for our future.
At the City of Port Adelaide Enfield we pride ourselves on
creating an environment of belonging and participation for
new residents, new arrivals and our emerging communities.
We believe that welcoming is not just the right thing to do;
it’s the smart thing to do, so we are the first South Australian
Council to officially join theWelcoming Cities. This is our official
commitment to providing a place where people from all walks
of life can feel safe, secure and welcome.
We also continue to run inclusive programs through our
libraries, community centres, sports and other venues to
ensure that everyone feels included in our community.
I continue to officiate at many citizenships ceremonies and I
feel privileged to be able to be part of this significant step and
new and exciting phase for these families.
We are on the verge of some very
exciting times and I believe we
are looking to a brilliant future
here in the City of Port
Adelaide Enfield, and we
are dedicated to helping
our region and our
community to reach our
full potential.
Mayor Gary Johanson
