Council's Kitchen Waste recycling service
In May 2010 Council launched a waste service in conjunction with KESAB to
incorporate fortnightly kitchen waste recycling service within the kerbside waste
collection service for residents.
The kitchen waste recycling service provides residents with a bio-degradable bag
and a Bio-basket to hold kitchen food waste and then dispose of the waste into
the Green Organics waste bin.
Food waste and other organic material make up around half of all waste placed in
rubbish bins. Organics are valuable resources that can be processed into
nutrient-rich compost. The Bio Basket aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
and divert thousands of tonnes of compostable material from landfill every year.
Environment Protection (Waste to Resources) Policy 2010
The Environment Protection (Waste to Resources) Policy, introduced by the
State Government in 2010, aims to increase resource recovery rates and reduce
the sending of hazardous, hard refuse and other waste types to landfill. The aims
of the Policy are to:-
Support
South Australia’s Strategic Plan 2011
target of reducing waste to
landfill by 25% by 2014.
Provide
regulatory underpinning for
South Australia’s Waste Strategy.
Prom
ote the implementation of the waste management hierarchy, impro
ve
resource recovery, and reduce waste going to landfill
Help
to broaden the responsibility for waste management amongst
stakeholders
Provide
improved options for regulating illegal dumping and inappropriate
stockpiling
Hel
p avoid or minimise the risks of environmental harm from waste
ma

Promote
consistency and transparency for industry by requiring the EPA to
take into account specified guidelines when assessing environmental
authorisations and development applications for waste depots
Create
opportunities for industry sectors to work with the EPA to achieve
certainty regarding expected behaviours and a more 'level playing field' by
developing prescribed industry codes of practice for the appropriate
management of waste.
