Provision of cycling network
The City of Port Adelaide Enfield recognises the personal health and
environmental benefits of cycling and walking as a means of transportation and
recreation. The Council is committed to providing an environment conducive to
these activities and has developed the Port Adelaide Enfield Local Area Bicycle
Plan 2008-2012.
The objectives are:
•
Enhance the safety of cycling for existing cyclists.
•
Enhance the attractiveness of cycling for potential cyclists.
•
Encourage cycling as a desirable alternative to motor vehicle travel.
•
Maintain a framework and direction for the continued development of cycling
facilities in the City of Port Adelaide Enfield.
•
Cater to the needs of the different categories of cyclists
•
Continue to develop a local bicycle network cognisant of established
networks (Bike Direct, linkages to adjoining Council areas etc).
•
Support community education initiatives such as the Travel Smart project (a
guide to cycling, walking and public transport).
The Plan includes a five year implementation action plan for the planning,
provision and promotion of the cycling network within the City. Maps 8, 9 & 10.
(pages 80, 81 & 82) indicate the existing and proposed cycling network.
Light Rail Proposal
The 30-year Plan for Greater Adelaide
states that integrating transport and land-
use planning is essential to achieve sustainable new urban form. The intention of
the Plan is to create a transit-focused city for efficient movement of people and
goods and services.
The Plan identifies the Port Adelaide Centre as a transit-oriented development
(TOD), and for the North Terrace tram line to be extended to the Port Centre and
Semaphore by 2018.
