Rainwater capture at Kilburn Depot
In 2008 Port Adelaide Enfield installed a 270,000 litre rainwater tank and
water harvesting system at the Council’s Kilburn Depot. This system is
designed to collect 75% of the rainwater from the roofs of the Council depot.
The water collected is used to fill the Council’s street sweepers and watering
trucks.
Rainwater harvesting System at Kilburn Community Centre
The system installed in 2009 has been designed to collect water from the
Centre’s roof and store in two 2500 litre tanks on site. The water is used for
flushing toilets in the main building. The system includes an auto-switching
unit, which selects between mains and rain water depending on supply.
Installations of residential solar hot water systems in the Council area via
rebate scheme
Solar hot water systems via State and Commonwealth rebate scheme
installations increased by 13 per cent from 2006/07 to 2007/08. Between 1
st
July 2008 and 30
th
November 2008 there were 331 solar systems installed
within the City of Port Adelaide Enfield (refer to table below). As a result, a
total reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 21,249 tonnes has been
achieved to that date since the rebate scheme was introduced. The reductions
in greenhouse gas emissions can also be partially attributed to the mandatory
regulation enforced from the 1 July 2009, through the Australian Building
Code, that requires all new and replacement water heaters installed into most
South Australian homes to be low emission types such as high efficiency gas,
solar or electric heat pump.
