Port Adelaide Library Photovoltaic Project
In June 2009, Port Adelaide Enfield Council in collaboration with the
Australian Government’s Photovoltaic Rebate Programme installed a 2.7 KW
photovoltaic system at the Port Adelaide Public Library, to assist in reducing
Council’s annual greenhouse gas emissions, to increase the public’s
awareness of the operation of photovoltaic systems and highlight the benefits
of solar energy.
The Port Adelaide Library Photovoltaic Project included:
.
Interactive/ real time monitoring screens displaying greenhouse gas
emission abatements and revenue generated from using solar energy.
Engaging with library users through workshops to raise the awareness of
sustainable technologies that could be utilised by individual households.
Local school curriculum focussing on solar energy education
Since 2009 Council has commissioned the installation of three 1.5 KW
systems at Hillcrest Community Centre, Greenacres Library, and Enfield
Community Centre, and a 6 KW system at Osborne Community Hall. Council
is also currently planning to install a large 22 KW system at the Willochra
Depot and a 9 KW system at the Kilburn Depot. All these systems combined
will reduce the greenhouse gas emissions entering into the atmosphere by 44
tonnes per year, and enable significant energy cost savings over time.
Solar Council Community Program
The Local Government Association (LGA) and Local Government Corporate
Services (LGCS) partnered together in January 2010 to manage a 12 month
Renewable Energy Pilot Program. A contractor was commissioned by LGCS
to deliver the program which allowed the bulk purchase of solar systems for
sale to the broader community at a reduced cost.
The City of Port Adelaide Enfield Council joined with other South Australian
Councils, in this pilot program, known as the Solar Councils program.
As a direct result of the Solar Councils program 106 solar systems were
purchased by residents within the City of Port Adelaide Enfield, contributing to
the removal of 80 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year from the
atmosphere (Refer to Figure 11 for more information).
