MAYOR’S MESSAGE
It’s hard to believe we’ve already reached
the final edition of Pen2Paper for the year.
It’s been an incredibly exciting time for our
region. For me, 2016 is a year characterised
by progress towards major projects and
developments, many of which will change
the landscape of our region.
There is strong collaboration between
the Council and the State Government,
and a real sense of public and private
commitment to the development
of the Port’s inner harbour.
With end of year festivities in full swing,
I’m always proud to attend events that
are strongly supported by the Council.
The recent Festival of Vintage: Boats,
Planes and Trains was a fabulous example
of showcasing the best the Port has to
offer.Asa long-time enthusiast, the classic
motorcycle display was close to my heart
and it was great to see the Port filled with
people, with so much to see and do.
Our region also recently hosted multi-
cultural, multi-faith Festivals including a
Friendship Dinner hosted by the SA
Zhu-Lin Buddhist Association Inc at Findon,
the Punjabi Khed Mela event at Blair Athol
and the Hindu Diwali Festival at Klemzig, all
of which I was honoured to attend.
It was great to see thousands of people
from a variety of cultures gather for these
events. With colour and movement and a
joyful atmosphere, these occasions are a
wonderful reflection of the ways in which
our diverse community unites to
enjoy itself.
At the October Council meeting it was
time again to vote for a new Deputy Mayor.
I must congratulate Vanessa McCluskey on
her appointment and my sincere thanks also
to outgoing Deputy Michael Iammarrone,
who filled the position over the past
year. Our Elected Members are an active,
professional and passionate group and it’s
been a pleasure chairing this year’s meetings,
with all the spirited debate.
It is a great feeling to come to the end of a
year marked by progress, knowing that the
next 12 months will yield even
more.Weare a region rich in culture and history and
the council is committed to protecting our
past while putting us on an exciting path
of development for the future. I thank you
as a community for bringing all the energy,
passion and enthusiasm that helps to make
our region the best place to live, work and
play. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas,
a happy festive season and a prosperous
NewYear.
Mayor Gary Johanson
