LARGS SAILING CLUB REGATTAS
It’s no secret to our community that Lefevre Peninsula is an
ideal location for the sport of sailing, but this January, the secret
will well and truly be out to the rest of the state, the nation and
the world.
That’s thanks to successful bids by Largs Bay Sailing Club (LBSC)
to host two youth sailing regattas – the Gill Australian & Open
Optimist Championships (2nd to 9th January, 2017) and the
Breeze Air by Seeley International 55th International Cadet
Australian Championship Regatta (11th to 19th January, 2017).
“We were able to win them both, which is huge,” said the LBSC’s
Optimist Event Coordinator, Kylie Baker.
“We are expecting around 1500 people to come through per day
and we expect a lot of them to go out on the water each day,
so we’re working in partnership with the Cruising Yacht Club of
South Australia and their facilities. And the One and All will do
a day sail to come out on the course which is great.” Michael
Simms, LBSC President said,“It’s a pretty significant event in SA.
All of these only come to each state every 7 years.”
There’ll be approximately 440 competitors across the two
events and entrants have already registered from interstate as
well as Thailand, the United States, New Zealand and Dubai.
It promises to be a major tourism and economic boon for
our region.
“When this competition was held on the Mornington Peninsula
a few years back, their revenue was $3 million – and they’re a
similar area to what we are,” said Kylie.
The City of PAE has sponsored the Largs Bay Sailing Club
with a $25,000 major event grant.
LBSC Commodore Matthew Carter said,“Events like this are
also heavily reliant on the dedication of volunteers – and
we’ll have more than 100 people helping to ensure things run
smoothly on and off the water.”
There’ll also be a third regatta event, the Australian 29er
and 49er Championships at the Royal South Australian Yacht
Squadron at Outer Harbor from 2nd – 8th January.
Australian Sailing spokesperson Ian Leeson says, “It will really
showcase the sport in this area and shows the general public that
sailing is a viable option to get involved with.”
SENIORS GROUPS
One of the the City of Port Adelaide Enfield's City Plan 2030
priorities is Community – with a focus on ways to promote
wellbeing through social inclusion. Senior groups play a vital role
in reducing isolation amongst our older residents. Clearview
Senior Citizens Club has been in operation since 1972. Isabella
has been a regular attendee for 20 years.
“It’s a great opportunity to get out of the house and catch up
with friends,” she said.
“We have a member who used to live in the area, but now lives
in Normanville and he travels all the way here every week, so
we must be fun!”, she added.
Nearby Klemzig Seniors Group has 72 members and offers
more structured activities with regular guest speakers, outings
and discounts to thousands of businesses through their national
benefits program.
“We love to get out and about with excursions almost weekly.
We enjoy mystery bus trips and social outings to various
industries and areas of SA,” said Secretary David Ireland.
The City of PAE supports seniors groups in various ways. Many
groups use Council halls to get together and Council volunteer
bus drivers provide transport both for people to get to the
groups and also for trips out.
Clearview Senior Citizens Club meets at Clearview Community
Hall every Tuesday 12:30-3:30pm.
Klemzig Branch of Seniors Australia meet at 10am on the third
Tuesday of each month at Klemzig Community Hall.
