The Kilburn North area provides another example of the co-location of
significant industry and ‘sensitive’ land uses such as residential and
educational. Within a 2 km radius of the Kilburn North area (at the intersection
of Grand Junction and Churchill Roads) there are a number of EPA licensed
sites, including plastics granulation, solvent manufacture, and steel fabrication.
One of these sites that has received considerable attention in the past is
Bradken Resources Foundry (established 1949).
This is an example of the historical co-location of industry and housing which, in
present terms, would be considered inappropriate due to an insufficient buffer
area..
As listed in the table above, according to the EPA the recommended separation
distances between large ferrous foundries and 'sensitive' uses (residential) is
500m.

Number of additional dwellings in key interface areas (per
annum)
Figure 18 Indicates that there are approximately 550 dwellings currently located
within a 500m radius of the Bradken foundry, and a general area of
approximately 3.4kms where the Residential Zone directly abuts the General
Industry Zone. Residents in this area are also subjected to additional air
