Air Quality Monitoring
EPA Ambient Air Quality Monitoring
Overall the EPA’s Air Quality Index for Adelaide and the Western Region of
metropolitan Adelaide was recorded as ‘good’ for most of the time in 2008,
except for exceeding National Environment Protection (NEPM) limits at Lefevre
Peninsula and Birkenhead air quality monitoring sites. This is mainly due to high
traffic volumes, emission intensive industries, and stockpiles within the region.
There are two National Environment Protection Measures (NEPM) related to air
quality. The first is the National Environment Protection (Ambient Air Quality)
Measure, and the most recent addition in 2004 is the National Environment
Protection (Air Toxics) Measure. The NEPM measures set health protection
standards for air pollution, and relate to the exposure of the general population
in residential areas.
An Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Program is carried out by the EPA in South
Australia. The program measures six pollutants as indicated by the Ambient Air
Quality NEPM. The ‘
South Australia’s Ambient Air Quality Program: A Review’
,
(EPA May 2005) recommended that results and reporting are made promptly
available to assist other agencies in their reporting requirements, such as State
of Environment Reports Another important recommendation is that the
monitoring network should be flexible enough to address issues of community
concern (
).
The data reported in this Council State of Environment Report is based on the
sampling results for the existing ambient air quality program for carbon
monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, sulphur dioxide and particulate matter.
Carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide are both air toxics that have recently
been monitored by the EPA. Nitrogen dioxide has been monitored at Netley Air
Quality Monitoring Station, as stated in EPA's South Australia Air Quality
Reporting.
Air toxics have been less frequently monitored and exist in low concentrations,
however pose a significant risk to human and environmental health. Motor
vehicles and fuel burning are two significant sources of air toxics.
