EPA Ambient Air Quality Monitoring
Particulate Emissions measured at other sites
In 2006, the EPA monitored fine particles (PM
10
) in the air at four monitoring
sites across Adelaide. The sites located in the suburbs of Birkenhead, Elizabeth
Downs, Kensington Gardens and Netley operated for the full calendar year. The
table below includes three of the four sites, Birkenhead, Kensington Gardens -
Netley commenced operation in March 2006.
At these three sites, there were 19 days in 2006 when high levels of fine
particles were recorded in the air. Most of these occasions (11 days) were
recorded at the Netley site, with six days at Birkenhead, and two days at
Kensington Gardens. The EPA assessed that, of these 19 days, six were due to
smoke haze from bushfires in Victoria, Kangaroo Island or the Murray-lands,
and two were due to strong winds and windblown dust.
In 2007, the EPA again monitored fine particles (PM
10
) in the air at the same
four monitoring sites in Adelaide. The results indicate that the average 24-hour
PM
10
concentration in Adelaide ranged from 15.3 μg/m3 at Kensington to 20.9
μg/m3 at Lefevre Primary (Birkenhead). The 24-hour NEPM standard of 50
μg/m3 was exceeded at each site, ranging from on one occasion at Kensington
to 11 occasions at Netley. This number of exceedences at Netley was higher
than the NEPM goal of no more than five exceedences at a site in a calendar
year.
In 2008, the EPA monitored fine particles (PM
10
) in the air at the four monitoring
sites in Adelaide. The table below includes only three of the four sites,
Birkenhead, Kensington Gardens and Netley that recorded PM
10
measurements.
