National Pollutant Inventory
The National Pollutant Inventory is a national database designed to provide the
community, industry and government with information on the quantities of 90
different pollutants being emitted to the air, land and water. Large facilities that
emit pollutants over the nominal threshold are required to estimate and report to
the NPI, and this data is broken down into Local Government areas, and
coupled with estimations of ‘diffuse’ pollutant sources (such as cars) to
determine a picture of the air pollutants being emitted across Australia.
The National Pollutant Inventory database can be accessed at:
.
Large industrial facilities around Australia estimate their emissions by a variety
of methods:- mass balance, engineering calculations, direct measurement
(monitoring), and emission factors. Each reporting facility is required to
calculate their emissions annually. The below table indicates the number of
facilities recorded in the City of Port Adelaide Enfield that generate emissions
classified under the National Pollutant Inventory.

Data from the NPI indicates the potential level of emissions of key pollutants
and indicative sources within the local airshed, and provides trend data on
increases in emissions from these sources.
Figures 23 to 25 below show the top sources for each substance from 2006/07,
to 2009/10. Source names for diffuse data are marked with asterix.
