Lefevre Peninsula Air Strategy Project
The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has initiated a project to develop a
comprehensive South Australian Air Quality Plan, with the broad purpose of
guiding management programs for air quality over the next two decades in
response to recommendation R1.1 of the South Australian
State of the
Environment Report 2008
The first stage of the program is focusing on the Lefevre Peninsula and is
known as the
Lefevre Peninsula Air Strategy Project
. The Lefevre Peninsula
region has been chosen because of the diversity of current development
programs in the area, which encompass residential, transport and industrial
activities. The project aims to improve long-term population impacts regarding
air quality, within a sustainable environmental, economic and social
development framework for South Australia.
The Lefevre Peninsula Air Strategy Project commenced in June 2010 with a
high-level steering committee chaired by the EPA, including representatives
from the City of Port Adelaide Enfield and key State agencies.
In developing the strategy, the project team has been guided by a range of state
and interstate strategies, policies and input from the project's Local Stakeholder
Reference Group.
The project is seeking broad community ownership of air quality and
participation through consultation processes in its management over the next
three decades.
Issues and Opportunities
Council to support community groups and residents to advocate to the
State Government for rail planning that considers the air quality, health
and well-being of the community.
Increased localised monitoring of industrial and transport-related air
emissions at Lefevre Peninsula and Kilburn.
A review of planning policy in regards to the location of childcare
centres/schools on or adjacent to arterial roads supporting significant
heavy vehicle traffic.
Consider including a requirement for air emission modelling as part of
urban development planning, particularly for transport networks and
potentially odorous or air polluting industries – using meteorological
parameters and dispersion modelling techniques.
Council to support EPA'S Lefevre Peninsula Air Quality Management Plan
and advocate for extension to other 'hot-spot' areas.
