Figure 27 below from the Commonwealth report, shows the extent of potential
flooding in the Port River and West Lakes area in a ‘worst case’ future sea level
rise scenario. It should be noted that the modelling for this project used a
‘bathtub’ method, which provides indicative mapping only, and is not suitable for
decision-making. The three western region Councils ( Port Adelaide Enfield,
Charles Sturt, and West Torrens) are undertaking more rigorous inundation
modelling in 2013, via the Western Region Climate Change Adaptation Plan
project.

Climate Change Adaptation – preparing and planning for the future
National and State policies
In 2007 the Commonwealth Government prepared a National Framework for
Climate Change Adaptation planning. The framework provides guidance
regarding the governance and jurisdictional roles and responsibilities of the
three levels of government and the private sector, in responding to the
challenges of climate change.
In 2012 the SA Government finalised a SA State Framework to support the
Commonwealth’s approach. The South Australian Climate Change Adaptation
Framework encourages a ‘regional’ approach to investigating and responding to
the potential challenges of climate change in the future.
Western Adelaide Region Climate Change Adaptation Plan
In response to the State framework, Port Adelaide Enfield Council in
collaboration with the Cities of Charles Sturt and West Torrens, who together
make up the “Western Region” of metropolitan Adelaide councils, will prepare a
regional climate change vulnerability assessment and Adaptation Plan in
2013/2014..
