Condition Indicator:
Stormwater pollution requests received by the City of Port
Adelaide Enfield.
An increase in reported pollution incidents from the community may provide a
measure of an increase in pollution incidents, or the increase in reporting may
be due to raised community awareness. In either case, it is a useful indicator to
show the trend of stormwater pollution incidence, to gauge changes in
community awareness regarding preventing pollution, and the reporting of
pollution incidents to authorities. Customer requests / complaints numbers to
Council regarding stormwater pollution have generally reduced since 2001/02.
This is not a complete record however, as the community may report pollution
incidents to Council or the EPA.

Management of construction sites
In 1999 the EPA released a handbook for the building industry to provide
information as to how to avoid pollution through adequate erosion and sediment
control practices, including the effective control of surface water run-off entering
and leaving the site, use of sediment collection devices to prevent sediment
leaving the site, and the provision for stockpiles to be stored within a sediment
barrier.
A drainage management strategy should be integrated into the initial
development plan for any site development. The EPA’s
Stormwater Pollution
Prevention Code of Practice for the Building and Construction Industry
states
that a Soil Erosion and Drainage Management Plan (SEDMP) must be prepared
where:
There is a high risk of sediment pollution to adjoining land or receiving
waters, or
The total area to be disturbed, or left disturbed, at any one time exceeds
0.5 ha.
