RFID Update
Preparations are well underway for the implementation
of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology across
our library service, with the system due to go live on
Thursday 16 October. This innovative and fast way of
borrowing items uses radio signals and tags to track and
monitor items and will allow borrowers to check out their
own materials. Multiple tags can be rapidly processed,
enabling many library items to be checked out in a short
period of time.
New RFID self-service kiosks and security gates have been
set up at each of our libraries to enable testing and staff
training. Our dedicated team of volunteers and staff have
applied and activated RFID tags, converting almost all of
our collection which is approaching 200,000 items.
RFID is quick and easy, it frees up staff to provide more
valued services to library users, while also reducing
manual handling. Library staff will continue to be on hand
and pleased to assist customers using the new self-service
kiosk or other services.
