AdelaideMetro doesn’t provide the only bus service in town.
The City of Port Adelaide provides a free Community Bus
service which operates in and around local streets.
Three different ‘community’ circuits operate between main
roads and local destinations like shops, aged care facilities,
community centres and local events. Easy-access vehicles are
maintained by council mechanics to ensure they run smoothly.
Arthur arrived in Australia 46 years ago as a ten pound Pom
and has been a volunteer bus driver with council for 13 years.
With golden oldies on the bus radio, he drives between the
Churchill and Arndale Shopping Centres, weaving in and out of
side streets to pick up passengers.
He enjoys getting out and about when he isn’t restoring old
Austin cars in his shed at home.
“I feel a great sense of community pride in doing this, plus I
enjoy getting out of the house and driving around the local
neighbourhoods,” he said.“It’s a good feeling to assist people
who can't drive themselves for whatever reason that may be. I
love to help out and enjoy a good conversation.”
Community buses are just one of the many services council
provides to help local residents but it wouldn’t be possible
without the dedication of volunteers. Council always welcomes
new drivers.
