YOUTH GROUPS PROVIDE A
POSITIVE ENVIRONMENT FOR
YOUNG PEOPLE IN THE EAST
For the past six years, the Rise Community Youth Group has
been running programs and activities for young people in their
state of the art facility in Lightsview.
The group's leaders are committed to making a difference in the
lives of young people by taking an active role in mentoring and
supporting them through issues such as identity, relationships,
friendships, purpose, leadership and endurance.
Their vision is that any young person can connect and belong,
be it, through the video games, sports, music and challenges
whilst establishing quality relationships with other young people
and leaders.
There are two programs that run parallel to each other, each
with upwards of 60 students attending each week. The two
programs are separated so each age group can connect on their
own personal level.
Mentors include teachers, chaplains and various other child-
related professions. This helps the group to cater for students
with additional needs, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder and
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).They also
work with the Department of Child Protection to support
children in care.
Group Leader NathanWatkins is proud of how the group can
provide a positive environment for children. "One child I'll
always remember, first attended when he was in Year
7.Atthe
time his family was stuck in a cycle of destructive behaviour. The
youth group to him, was a place where he felt like he belonged
and was loved and cared about. What appeared to be an almost
hopeless situation has now become a student with drive. He
finished Year 12, won a Children's Week Award for volunteering
with children and is training to be a manager at a fast food
resturant."
The Rise Community Youth Group is Christian-based, however
there is no expectation or pressure that participants change
their religious views. The group is for Year 5 to Year 12 students
and runs every Friday night 6pm-8:30pm during the school term.

GROWING FOR GOLD
SPORTS PROGRAM COMING
IN OCTOBER
Growing for Gold is a brand new program for the City of PAE
which encourages young people aged 3-16 to participate in
sporting and recreational activities within their local community.
We are working with local sporting clubs to open their doors
to promote their club activities free of charge to participants.
All club sessions are fully supervised and designed to introduce
young people to a wide range of different sport and recreation
opportunities. There is a focus on being inclusive, having fun and
learning something new whilst getting active.
Built into the event is an incentive scheme that encourages
young people to try different activities and most importantly to
take the next step of joining a club of their choice.
The Growing for Gold program is an excellent opportunity to
promote your sports club to the local community and increase
participation and membership through your programs.
Registrations close very soon, so If your club is interested in
being involved or would like further information please contact
Paul Zimny or Lucas Norman on 8405 6736 or email
lucas.norman@portenf.sa.gov.au.
Growing for Gold is an initiative of the City of Salisbury, and the
City of Port Adelaide Enfield looks forward to partnering with
them and bringing it to our community in 2017.
