TOUR DOWN UNDER SIZZLED
INTO PORT ADELAIDE
On 15 January, over 9,000 people braved the record-breaking
heat conditions to watch Stage One of the 2019 Santos Tour
Down Under race into Port Adelaide with a sprint to the finish
line on St Vincent Street.
With temperatures soaring to an all-time high in Adelaide, the
race did not include the planned loop around the Port River for
the safety of the riders, however that did not stop fans from
cheering them on from the streets and surrounding balconies.
So thank you to everybody from the community who joined us
on the day, played a part in putting this event together and ran
around at the last minute to help us beat the extreme heat by
moving as much as we could inside.
We also won the best dressed town award on the day, and
captured the event, the party, the atmosphere and the cycling all
on video, which you can find on our website and social media.
LET’S FLY A KITE
Come along to Semaphore beach over the Easter long weekend
in 2019 and watch the sky fill with colour, twists and twirls and
kites of all shapes and sizes - when the Adelaide International
Kite Festival returns!
The 2019 Festival will feature international guest kite flyers
from New Zealand and as always, we will have kite flyers from
interstate and locally in South Australia flying too.
As in recent years, the Festival Marketplace will return with
stallholders selling their wares and running activities for all to be
involved in. This area is on the foreshore and open 11am - 5pm
daily so be sure to check it out. The AIKF is run by the Adelaide
Kite Flyers Association in conjunction with K Marie Events, and
was established in 1997.
PLACEMAKING AT THE PEAR
The Pear Cafe in Alberton was started by locals Joost and
Christie in an attempt to bring the neighbourhood closer
together. The cafe is open seven days for coffee, breakfast, cakes
and is a place to meet new and old friends, to get good coffee, to
have a chat and to get involved in numerous community-driven
events. The Pear’s placemaking aim is to reduce social isolation
(particularly among older people) in the neighbourhood, to
connect neighbours with neighbours and to make people proud
of living in Alberton. Every week, dozens of neighbours join one
or more of The Pear’s social clubs for knitting, walking, gardening,
or book discussions. Neighbours volunteer their time to facilitate
workshops and share their knowledge and skills in different
topics. On January 27, The Pear organised the first ‘Alberton
Neighbourhood Street Party’ with the support of a PAE Places
Grant. The street party, with live music and stalls, marked one
year since the opening of The Pear, but more importantly it
marked one year of neighbourliness; of looking out for each
other.
Our PAE Places Grants can be used to improve how we feel
and use our public spaces and to help you develop, invigorate
and activate your neighbourhood. They are open to all so if
you’ve got a great idea about an event or activity for your
neighbourhood we would love to hear about it. Applications are
currently open so get in touch now to discuss your idea. Visit
