URBAN PLANNING CHANGES
ON THE HORIZON
If you’ve ever built a carport, subdivided land, or formally
commented on a development application, you have dealt with
the urban planning system.
Controlled by state legislation, the State Parliament has passed
new legislation to overhaul the entire planning system after
25 years.
The new legislation is called the Planning, Development and
Infrastructure Act 2016. It is being rolled out over the next 18
months, and will change the way that development is conducted
in the Council area (and the whole state).
The State Government has created the State Planning Portal,
to explain the features of the new system. It also discusses the
public consultation that will be conducted on the new system,
which will occur during 2019 and 2020. You can access the Portal
here
www.saplanningportal.sa.gov.au/The consultation process gives local residents and business
owners the opportunity to comment on new planning policies
and processes. This may relate to things like the zoning of land,
heritage protection, maximum building heights, and residential
character.
Council has taken part in the consultation process so far, and will
continue to do so in the future. You can find our submissions on
our website. Residents and businesses are encouraged to make
their views known to the State Government as well.
The next step in the consultation is the release of discussion
papers on urban design and neighbourhood character.
NEWTASTE SENSATIONS
Get ready for Food@5085 when the City of PAE brings an
exciting new multicultural food event to the picturesque Stockade
Botanical Park, Howard Road, Northfield.
Held in association with Tasting Australia on Saturday 13 April,
from 12 to 5pm. Food @5085 brings different cultures and their
food together, so you can sample exotic food in a relaxed setting
and share in their stories around their cultural dishes.
Preparing for the event was also the perfect opportunity for us
engage and upskill newly-arrived members of our community
about the basics of food safety and legal requirements to enable
them to participate in events offering food to the public. To this
end we recently supported 14 Uyghur women to partake in a
food safety course at Port Adelaide TAFE.
We are excited to see what they will bring to Food@5085 and
hope that having these qualifications will assist them in developing
their home-based food businesses further in the future.
Don’t miss Food@5085, where cooks and chefs from East
Turkestan, Tatarstan, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Syria, Iraq, Tibet,
Kenya, Sierra Leone and more, will provide a smorgasbord of
new and exciting tastes. For more information go to our What’s
On in PAE page.
AND AFTER ALL … IT’S
WONDERWALLS
South Australia’s International mural festival has been held in
2015, 2017 and returns to Port Adelaide for 2019 in conjunction
with The Big Picture Fest from 29-31 March. We will be
welcoming artists from around the world to undertake large scale
art pieces on some of the open spaces of the Port.
International artists including Sat One (Germany) Peeta (Italy)
Akue 1 (Russia) Phat One (New Zealand) Lady Diva (New
Zealand) will be working alongside local and emerging artists.
Our city will become a huge canvas and we can’t wait to see the
results.
