State of the Environment Report 2012 - page 10

Executive Summary

Land
The overuse and poor management of land and soil resources can result in land
contamination, erosion, degradation, activated acid sulphate soils, and land
subsidence. Within the City, historic and current activities such as those
associated with the significant industrial / commercial sector can have a
negative impact on the quality and useability of land.
The Land chapter discusses the following environmental priorities:
The appropriate management of the remediation and development of land
in the City where historic soil contamination may exist.
Ensuring appropriate planning controls and management practices (
including Council’s) are in place in areas subject to acid sulfate soils, so as
to ensure ‘best practice’ remedial and preventative measures are taken
during works activities in risk areas.
