The Gillman Wetlands
The Gillman Wetlands are comprised of the Barker Inlet Wetlands as a main
feature and the smaller Range and Magazine Creek Wetlands.
Range Wetlands & Magazine Creek Wetlands
The Range Wetlands (17 ha) and Magazine Creek Wetlands (36 ha) are
smaller wetland systems than Barker Inlet. . The Range Wetland receives
stormwater flows from the Hanson Road and North Arm Road drainage
systems, and Magazine Creek from the Torrens Road Catchment via the
Eastern Parade and Jenkins Street Drains. A significant feature of these
wetlands is that they ultimately drain into the designated flood storage area
north of the wetlands at Gillman. This is an important function of the area, which
as well as receiving freshwater from the catchments, also acts as a temporary
storage area for high tides and inundation from the sea. The wetlands were
built in the 1980s and are designed to intercept urban and industrial stormwater
runoff and improve the quality prior to discharge into the mangrove estuary.

The Magazine and Range Wetlands outlets are points where the NRM Board
have established water quality sampling sites. Water samples are taken at
regular intervals and tested for various qualities including pH and conductivity.
Water level data is recorded by a data logger and transmitted remotely via a
telemetry system. The site is solar powered by a roof mounted solar panel. The
data is available online via the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural
Resources Management Board website.
