Mayor’s Message
With its high representation of Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islanders, twice the
Adelaide metropolitan average, the City
of Port Adelaide Enfield has the
opportunity to be the leaders in the way
it works with and for the Aboriginal
population in the community.
At the recent Local Government
Association Annual General Meeting,
for example, we achieved unanimous
support for our motion that local
government in South Australia support
the recognition of Aboriginal peoples in
the Australian Constitution as a priority
ahead of, or at the same time as, the
recognition of Local Government in the
Australian Constitution.
This was an important step on a national
stage, but Council has shown strong
commitment in its support for our
indigenous community in a number
of ways. For instance, we’ve joined
forces with some of Australia’s leading
businesses and non-government
organisations to support the ‘Racism.
It Stops With Me’ campaign.
We’ve built a strong partnership with
Kura Yerlo, which celebrated its 25th
anniversary during Nunga Week; each
year we support the annual Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander awards; and
this year for the first time the City of
Port Adelaide Enfield provided two
$5000 scholarships that will be awarded
annually to support Aboriginal residents
to undertake university level studies.Kura
Yerlo’s vision is one of ‘walking together
for a strong culture and a sustainable
future’, and it’s a vision that Council
wholly supports.
Also, when you’re passing through Black
Diamond Square, do pause for a moment
to admire the heritage restoration work
that’s been undertaken at the Visitor
Information Centre.Through painting
and masonry repairs, using conservation
materials and techniques, this significant
building has been restored to its former
glory thanks to funding from the City of
Port Adelaide Enfield and Renewal SA.
Finally, the image above was taken on
Sunday 10 November at the launch of the
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander War
Memorial, at the Torrens Parade Ground.
The Memorial pays tribute to the service
and sacrifice rendered by all Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander veterans and
Council was a proud contributor to the
development of the memorial.
