Celebration of Ability
The International Day of People with Disability is a
United Nations sanctioned day that aims to promote an
understanding of people with disability and encourages
support for their dignity, rights and well-being. It also seeks
to increase awareness of the benefits of the integration of
people with disability in every aspect of political, social,
economic and cultural life. More than 4 million Australians
have a disability, and at the 2011 Census, more than 7300
persons living in the City of Port Adelaide Enfield reported
they required assistance with core activities such as personal
care or communication. Occurring on 3 December each
year, the International Day of People with a Disability
allows us to celebrate the contributions that people with
a disability make every day to our community. This year
marks the 21st anniversary of the recognition of this day in
Australia and once again the Enfield Community Centre will
come alive for the Celebration of Ability event.
This colourful event highlights the many abilities, skills
and interests of people with disabilities who live in our
community. This year the event is brought to you by SCOSA
who have a long history of service to those with a disability
in this State. “The City of Port Adelaide Enfield is supporting
the event as it is committed to raising the awareness of
people with disabilities in the wider community,” says
Stephen Melville, Council’s Director of Community
Development. As usual, the day will include a balloon artist,
karaoke, an animal nursery, folk singing and a free sausage
sizzle lunch staffed by volunteers from the local Lions
Club. The whole event is provided free to the public and
everybody is invited to attend. The Celebration of Ability
will be held on Tuesday 3 December from 10.30am-2pm at
the Enfield Community Centre, 540 Regency Road, Enfield.
Come along and enjoy the day!
Connecting the Community
The North East Community Partnerships (NECP) is a network
of agencies and service providers, who are active in Gilles
Plains, Windsor Gardens, Hillcrest, Klemzig, Holden Hill
and surrounding suburbs who meet at regular intervals to
discuss relevant issues and work collaboratively for the
benefit of the local community. The NECP aims to ensure
that agencies and services do not work in isolation from
each other, but work together seeking opportunities to
participate in joint venture initiatives identified through
partnership meetings.
The network was established in response to an agency
workshop that was held in 2012 to discuss the needs of
the local community. This workshop identified a number of
topics and issues that were seen as priorities by participants,
including a series of key actions to be considered through
further collaboration.
The NECP came together in November 2012 and identified
several projects to be undertaken in 2013. The projects, now
successfully completed, included working in partnership
with Windsor Gardens Vocational College to help the
College become actively involved with and accessed by the
community; the development of a local Services Directory
for the use of members of the NECP and the creation
of a Youth Program for Young Carers, based at Enfield
Community Centre.
The next step for the NECP is to set a number of
project priorities for the group to undertake in 2014, to
continue its ongoing collaborative work for the benefit
of the local community.
