A number of local metropolitan councils and
organisations are again working together this summer
to help teach new arrival communities about beach and
water safety. The aim of the program is to help educate
young people new to Australia about the possible risks
of beach activities.
The program will be held at Henley Surf Lifesaving Club
on Wednesday 18 December 2013 and will cover a
range of topics including:
• Understanding the role of surf lifesavers.
• Learning how a rescue is conducted.
• How to swim in the surf or paddle a board.
• Safe swimming - swimming between the markers,
swimming with a friend and water depths.
• Sun safety, such as wearing hats, lotions
and sunglasses.
Council is offering young new arrivals, migrants or
international students aged 12-18 who live in the City of
Port Adelaide Enfield the opportunity to be involved in
this fun and informative day at the beach.
Registration for the program is required and numbers are
limited so please book early. Transport will be provided.
For more information or to register your interest please
contact Diana on 8405 6709.
A City of dog lovers
They say dogs are man’s best friend, and with the analysis of
some new data it seems we certainly are a city of dog lovers.
The data shows we have more than 16,000 dogs registered
across the City - that’s roughly one dog for every seven
people. There seems to be a pretty even spread of pet
pooches across the seven Council wards, however there is a
higher concentration of dogs in the Parks ward, particularly in
Devon Park, Dudley Park and Croydon Park.
Some frequently occurring dogs’ names include Bella, Molly,
Max, Charlie, Buddy, Jack, Ruby, Oscar, Roxy and Missy.
There are also a large number of dogs with unique names -
3464 of the pooches have names that are all their own. It’s
easy to tell where some owners got their inspiration with
celebrity-named pups like Bruce Wayne, Slim Dusty, Marilyn
Monroe and Dizzee Rascal. The owners of Dallas, Tennessee,
Austin, Brooklyn, Houston and Vegas may have been inspired
by an American road trip while other worldly pups include
India and China.
There’s also Chocolate and Candy, Jellybean, Popcorn and
Snickers along with a few Pumpkins and a Turnip. Then
there’s the musical Mozart and the literary Oscar Wilde and
the artistic Michelangelo, the dashing Napoleon, the magical
Merlin and the philosophical Plato.
Annual registrations for dogs aged over three months were
due at the end of August. This year, Council sent SMS
messages to dog owners to remind them the registrations
were due, and adopted a new model of sending the
registration tag with the reminder notice. This saves pet
owners having to make the trip into Council to receive their
pet’s tag and payments can now be made by BPay. Council
also offers a free first registration for dogs adopted from the
RSPCA or Animal Welfare League, and discounts apply
if your dog is desexed or microchipped.
