Kilburn Community
Centre turns 50
Did you know that the first buildings that now
form part of the Kilburn Community Centre were
officially launched as a YMCA recreation centre
in 1965?
For many years the Kilburn YMCA provided a range
of recreational programs to the local community,
including roller skating, badminton and movie
nights. The stadium was augmented to include
squash courts and a function hall across a number
of expansions spanning many years.
When the Port Adelaide and Enfield councils
amalgamated in 1996, the building officially became
the Kilburn Community Centre. This decision was
achieved largely as a result of the efforts of active
local residents who saw the value of retaining the
centre as a community resource. Thanks to their
vision, the Kilburn Community Centre still stands
today as a vital and vibrant local hub.
To celebrate the history and significance of Kilburn
Community Centre, a 50th birthday event is
planned for later this year. A date has not been
set at this stage but it is likely to be in September.
Planning for this milestone event has already begun.
Local resident Betty Dobson helped to spark
interest in the idea of a 50th birthday celebration by
presenting her original invitation to the launch of
the YMCA building in 1965. Part of the invitation is
shown on the front cover of this newsletter.
If you would like to be involved in the planning or
wish to participate in the event itself, please contact
Leigh at the centre on 8405 6730 to register your
interest. We look forward to seeing you at
this exciting event.
July holiday program
Kilburn Community Centre’s exciting holiday
program is back again in July with a range of
recreational and artistic pursuits for pre-school and
primary school aged children.
Recreational activities will include an imagination
playground, roller-skating and team sports such as
basketball. Craft activities will be available on some
afternoons of the holidays as well.
Times, age ranges and capacity limits vary for each
activity. A detailed schedule will be available a
few weeks before the holidays begin. This will be
available on the Council website, in hard copy at the
centre, or can be distributed to you directly via post
or email by calling the centre on 8405 6730.
In many cases there will be ongoing term-based
programs at Kilburn Community Centre for
interested families to remain involved in these
types of activities.
The July school holiday activities are free of charge
and registration for all activities is through a single
registration form that can be filled out upon a
family’s first arrival during the holidays. No prior
registration is necessary.

Kilburn Community Centre on 8405 6730.
