Reconciliation Week celebrates and

builds on the respectful relationships

shared by Aboriginal and Torres Strait

Islander peoples and other Australians.

Reconciliation Week is celebrated

from Wednesday 27 May to

Wednesday 3 June.

Council supports Reconciliation Week

by offering small grants to all schools

within the Council area to enable

them to participate in activities about

reconciliation. In recent years we have had

up to 28 schools take up these grants with

over 11,000 children being involved.

Further information is available at

www.reconciliation.org.au/nrw

or on

the Council’s website.

Book launch and peace walk

As part of the 2015 Reconciliation Week

celebrations, Council will support the

Global Communities for Peace launch

of ‘Stolen. Book 2: Times of Shame and

Glory’ at the Port Adelaide TAFE,

9.30-10.30am on Wednesday 3 June 2015.

The official launch will be conducted by

the Honourable Susan Close, Minister

for Education.

‘Stolen’ is a three part series of books

written by Jerry Piasecki, which tell

the stories of Aboriginal young people.

Alberton Primary School, Ernabella School

in the APY Lands, Warriapendi School and

Thebarton Senior College students were

involved in the telling of stories.

Following the launch a Peace Walk will

leave Harts Mill at 10.45-11.00am going

to Lartelare. Margaret Brodie, daughter of

Veronica Brodie and direct descendant

of Lartelare, will lead the walk and give a

talk at the park.

All are welcome to come along to the

launch and to participate in the walk.

ATSI Tertiary Education

Scholarship recipients

Council provides two scholarships

each year for Aboriginal or Torres Strait

Islander residents to support them to

attend university.

By supporting our local people to study at,

and gain university qualifications Council

seeks to break the cycle of unemployment

and disadvantage.

The recipients for 2015 are Susan Dixon

and Nicolas Reid.

Both Susan and Nicolas are studying at

the University of Adelaide. Susan is in her

fourth year of a Bachelor of Law Degree

and has an opportunity to participate in an

exchange programme with the University

of Alberta in Canada in Semester 2 as

part of her studies. She has had a strong

involvement with the local community

all her life and is committed to using her

studies to assist in further advocating for

her people.

Nicolas is in the second year of a Bachelor

of Dental Surgery. Nic has demonstrated

his desire to not only gain qualifications

but also to support the integration of

Indigenous Cultural Competencies within

the curriculum and to provide input into

issues surrounding Indigenous oral health.

He hopes to inspire the next generation of

Indigenous dentists.

The Scholarships were presented to

Susan and Nicolas by Mayor Gary

Johanson at the Council meeting held

on 12 May 2015.
