Cultural literacy program
An exciting new program is about to start at Kilburn
Community Centre at the beginning of Term 1 that will
cater to the many new arrivals to Australia who are settling
within the City of Port Adelaide Enfield.
Long-term Council volunteers Francoise and Lydia have for
many years delivered English language classes at Kilburn
Community Centre. They will be changing direction in
2014 to increase their focus on cultural literacy – learning
the basics of living in Australia.
Whilst maintaining the language learning component of
the program, the classes will be become less structured and
more social, inviting newly-arrived Australians and their
families to attend a safe and comfortable program that is
close to home.
People of all backgrounds are welcome to attend the
sessions, which will take place on Friday mornings at the
Centre from 9.30 to 11.30am. Newly-arrived migrants are
not the only people who are eligible to attend – people
who have lived in Australia for many years and who
wish to become more knowledgeable and confident in
Australian public life are more than welcome to join in.
The program will be child-friendly, with children able
to take part in the activities in which their parents
participate. A creche is not available for the program.
Spread the word and tell your relatives and neighbours
about this exciting program.
Celebration of Ability
An event in December 2013 marked the 21st year of
recognition for the International Day of People with
Disability. Occurring on 3 December, this United Nations
sanctioned day aims to promote an understanding of
people with disability and encourage community support
for their dignity, rights and well-being.
Several community groups and agencies supported SCOSA
with the planning and delivery of the Celebration of Ability,
a community event at the Enfield Community Centre. A few
drops of rain in the morning didn’t dampen the spirits of
the more than 400 people in attendance, who also enjoyed
the opportunity to sing some favourite hits on the karaoke
machine, meet some wildlife at the petting zoo and enjoy a
bbq prepared by Gilles Plains Lions Club.
Throughout the year, Council also delivers a number of
programs for people with a disability, and further supports
numerous community agencies and groups to plan events
and activities, including social programs, arts and music
workshops and training.
For more information about Council opportunities for
people with a disability contact Council in 8405 6600.
