Looking into our past…
A Gala Day. ‘The Mail’ Poultry
Boys’ Education.
When the scheme was inaugurated last year
for interesting the boys in poultry they were
promised four visits to leading poultry yards
during the year. The idea was that they should
see what was being done by breeders, and to
what extent poultry rearing was being carried
on. Under the guidance of ‘Practical’ the final
visit for the season was held last Saturday at
the Koonoowarra Poultry Yards, Enfield. The
proprietors showed the keenest interest in
the boys and did all they could to make their
visit enjoyable and interesting, describing in
detail all the plant used in the hatching and
rearing of poultry.
A tram load of boys and friends journeyed
to Enfield, and walked the short distance
to Mr Manuel’s, and a number of people
drove, so there was quite a display of horses
and traps… In order to give the boys every
opportunity seeing the birds and plant to the
best advantage they were divided into two
sections, the boys being conducted by Mr
Manuel and ‘Practical,’ and the visitors by the
Poultry Expert Mr D. F. Laurie.
Clem of Nailsworth:— This is my report for
February - My birds are in good health, and
are all laying well after 11 months’ laying.
Purple Band does not play around with the
others, and when I feed them she always
goes to one end of the feeding vessel. I
sowed some more rape last Saturday, and it
was up on the Wednesday. I watered it every
morning and night and also my kale is doing
better than what it was. The rape I sowed
before is nearly ready to cut. They have laid
95 eggs for the month, and I have sold them
for 7/2 ½. I am very pleased that I went up to
Mr. Manuel’s, and also that I got a prize. I was
not expecting one. I mean to work hard to try
and get higher than fourth next year.
