Celebrating our Community
The City of Port Adelaide Enfield is proud of its community
members and would like to bring attention to the following
groups and individuals.
Welcome to our New Citizens
January 2014 saw 38 adults and seven children taking
part in the City of Port Adelaide Enfield Australia Day
citizenship ceremony. Our newest citizens join us from
countries that include India, Thailand, Lithuania, Nauru,
China, United Arab Emirates, Venezuela, Bosnia &
Herzegovina, Britain, Ukraine and Vietnam.
Congratulations to…
John Ford - Citizen of the Year
John has been a dedicated volunteer in Port Adelaide for
more than 20 years, working with groups and organisations
to preserve the Port’s history including the SA Maritime
Museum, Port Adelaide Historical Society, the Port Adelaide
branch of the National Trust and Renewal SA Forum to
name a few. John, who chairs the Port Adelaide Community
Arts Centre, has a passion for art and community and his
contributions are greatly appreciated.
Thien Nguyen - Young Citizen of the Year
Thien is a very active volunteer for many community
organisations, including the SA Chapter of the Vietnamese
Community, the Australian Refugee Association Homework
Club and the St John Ambulance Service. He is also a
volunteer Vietnamese translator who is deeply connected
with the Vietnamese community and helps to connect
people with services and programs that will benefit them.

Semaphore Street
Fair
- Community Event of the Year
The largest one day community event in the Council area,
the
Semaphore Street Fair
increases the awareness and
profile of Semaphore as a must visit food destination. The
Semaphore Mainstreet Association brings together local
schools, churches, community and sporting groups to
participate in the Fair which attracts not only locals but
visitors from all over Adelaide.

The
Semaphore Music
Festival
runs annually over the
October long weekend and includes free concerts held
on the foreshore reserve along with local hotels hosting
performances. Over the years the festival has developed
into an outstanding contemporary music event for all ages.

awards to Roderick Blue, Christine Bonney, Mary Lou
Byrnes and Gavin Robert Tape.
In 2013 Council signed an agreement with
the Australian Human Rights Commission
to support the national ‘RACISM. IT STOPS
WITH ME‘ campaign.
Research shows that:
• One in seven Australians say they
experienced discrimination because of
their colour or background in 2011, a
figure that has been increasing steadily
in recent years.
• Around one in five Australians say
they have experienced race-hate talk,
such as verbal abuse, racial slurs or
name calling.
• Around one in ten Australians say they
have experienced race-based exclusion
in the workplace or social events.
• More than one in 20 Australians say
they have been physically attacked
because of their race.
The City of Port Adelaide Enfield has a total
population of 118,330. Of these, 72,142
were born in Australia, 2,713 are Aboriginal
or Torres Strait Islanders and a further 24%
come from countries where English is not
the first language.
As the major initiative for Harmony Day
2014 Council is printing 50,000 bumper
stickers with the ‘RACISM. IT STOPS
WITH ME’ logo that will be distributed to
all residents in the Council region in the
weeks before Harmony Day, 21 March 2014.
Council encourages all residents to
display the stickers on their cars, bikes
or anywhere they can be seen by others.
Children can also get involved by
displaying the bumper stickers on lunch
boxes, school bags and books.
