Enfield Ward Profile
Before European settlement, the area that is now known as
Enfield was covered with an abundance of pine trees. In
1840, a 35-year-old labourer named George Hickox came
to Adelaide from Worthing, in Sussex. Hickox applied for
a land grant, which served as permission to buy land, and
with the grant he purchased a substantial area that includes
much of what is now Enfield. He planned a number of
blocks of various sizes and named the section the Village
of Enfield. Despite early concerns that the land would not
be productive, by 1843 a traveller recorded that corn was
growing very well. Most of the first families to settle in the
section took smaller blocks, 22 of which faced onto
Main North Road.
Thomas Rake, who settled in Enfield in 1849, wrote home
to relatives in England that his new home had ‘an English
aspect, with a delightful climate’.
The area now known as Kilburn was originally known as
Chicago. Being lower lying, it was not a favoured area for
settlement and was prone to flooding by swamp water.
The Enfield Ward now includes the suburbs of Blair Athol,
Broadview, Clearview, Enfield, Kilburn, Manningham and
part of Sefton Park. It’s a ward with an important local
history, and which is increasingly recognised for its cultural
diversity and creativity. At the 2011 Census the Ward was
home to more than 22,000 people.
Beautiful Enfield
Folland Park, adjacent the Enfield Cemetery, is home to
more than 3 hectares of mallee eucalypt and native pine
woodland, a thriving example of the vegetation found
in the northern metropolitan area prior to European
settlement. One of the very few areas of native bushland
left on the entire Adelaide Plains, the site is secured to
ensure it remains a natural oasis in the middle of our City.
The park was named after Charles French Folland, an early
settler whose son was later chairman of the Enfield Council
from 1903-1904.
Must see
There are numerous historic landmarks around the Enfield
Ward including the majestic property at Barton Vale,
Enfield, St Clement’s Church, Blair Athol, and a more
recent memorial to Dr Bennett at the Bennett Avenue
Reserve in Manningham. Enfield Cemetery also offers
insights into the evolving history of our city. It features
separate sections including the RSL and Children’s
Garden, as well as areas catering for many denominations
including Anglican, Buddhist, Catholic, Lutheran, Muslim
and Orthodox.
Must do
Community Centres are the heart of our community. Both
the Kilburn and Enfield Community Centres are located
in the Enfield ward, and offer a range of programs and
activities to suit all tastes and interests. From programs
for new migrants, strength exercises and social programs
for seniors, community luncheons, art and craft groups,
playgroups our centres offer them all. There are programs
for children, young people, students, people with
disabilities, carers, artists… everyone is welcome at
Council’s community centres.
Must try
A diverse range of new businesses have sprung up along
the northen end of Prospect Road within the Enfield Ward.
A trip to this multicultural strip allows visitors to sample
a host of culinary delights including fresh warm
Turkish flat bread and coffee, African curries and
Vietnamese phô. Council is also developing public art
along this bustling main road to further enhance the
Prospect Road experience.
